The Global Studies RAP is facilitated by a Director, Associate Director, and Program Manager, as well as a group of student staff. Both our Director and Associate Director teach in the RAP, with the Associate Director teaching for us exclusively (5 courses/year). We are also one of the few RAPs on campus who boast rostered faculty members, meaning we have first pick when it comes time to create a schedule of courses. Our Program Manager is responsible for the administrative, behind-the-scenes undertakings of the RAP, including budgeting and events planning, and is a knowledgable resource to all undergraduate students. G-RAP is the only residence hall at CU that employs Student Coordinators, who are former or current G-RAP students responsible for marketing events, blogging, website maintenance, etc. We are also one of the only RAPs on campus that hire former participants as leaders for current students; these student staff are known as G-RAP Fellows. They are responsible for collaboration with professors in planning study sessions, finding volunteer opportunities for students, organizing some of the program’s co-curricular events and much more. G-RAP is composed of a group of talented, resourceful, and helpful staff members whose goal is to make the first-year experience of our students the best possible.
Administration & Rostered Faculty
![]() Tom Zeiler, Director | Tom Zeiler is the Director of the Global Studies Residential Academic Program. A professor of History and International Affairs, he has taught at CU Boulder since 1990. He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, attended Emory University as an undergrad, and went to grad school in Massachusetts. He has also lived in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, London, and Paris. Tom serves on editorial boards in his field of diplomatic history, consults for the U.S. Department of State, and teaches and writes on American foreign relations, war and society, globalization, and baseball. He has had the great fortune of spending two Fulbright fellowship years abroad – one in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the other in Tokyo, Japan. Tom likes to travel, play the saxophone badly, run nearly every day, golf, ski, hike/backpack/camp, go to baseball games, read a lot, write, contribute to local and international charities, serve as president of the George Washington IB Foundation, ride his scooter, travel on business (too much) and pleasure (not enough), take long road trips (especially for camping and to the beach in North Carolina), and eat way more than needed. He looks forward to seeing G-RAP students and staff every day and believes he has the best job on campus because of them. |
![]() Carol Conzelman, Associate Director | Caroline S. Conzelman is the Associate Director of G-RAP. She got her B.S. and B.A. in Zoology/Pre-Med at Miami University of Ohio way back in the 1980s, and then she was a high school biology and geology teacher in California (1993 Humboldt State University teaching credential) before going back to graduate school in cultural anthropology in 1997. She has been a university instructor at CU and the University of Denver since 2002; she most loves to teach about Latin America, democracy, social movements, US foreign policy, and international development. She holds a doctorate in Anthropology (2007 University of Colorado at Boulder), for which she conducted 20 months of ethnographic fieldwork in the Yungas region of Bolivia and research in Washington, DC. She analyzed how coca leaf growers in Bolivia’s traditional coca cultivation zone utilize the indigenous trade union form of community democracy and the liberal representative form of municipal democracy to promote their development agendas for coca leaf in resistance to the U.S. “war on drugs.” Carol has also served on the National Board of Directors for the international development NGO Global Volunteers, for whom she has led volunteer service learning programs in communities around the world. Carol enjoys baking cookies with her 2 year old daughter, commuting on her bike, hiking all the trails around Boulder, skiing fresh pow pow, playing pool, backpacking around Latin America, dancing at music festivals, and being part of the great learning community that is CU. |
![]() Catherine Bogle, Program Manager | Catherine Bogle joined the Global Studies RAP last August as program manager. She received her bachelor’s degree in anthropology from CU Boulder in 2008, after which she moved to Denver to work for an educational travel company. In 2010, Catherine was lured to the charming community of Brattleboro, Vermont for a master’s program in international education at SIT Graduate Institute. She is currently wrapping up her thesis (in the wee hours of the night) and plans to graduate this July. A native Coloradan, Catherine loves everything Colorado. With her childhood winters divided between Denver and Winter Park, she will never turn down a ski date. She also enjoys trail running, hiking, and backpacking, and consequently suffers from a serious crush on this town. As much as Catherine adores living at 5,280 feet, she is passionate about meeting new people, learning different cultures, and eating unique (and crazy!) food. In 2007 she spent five months studying wildlife conservation and ecology in Tanzania, and she has traveled extensively throughout Australia and western and central Europe. This spring she was lucky enough to explore the rainforests of Costa Rica. Above all, Catherine loves sharing her passion, energy, and support with the students of G-RAP, and she firmly believes she has the coolest job around. |
![]() Jessica Martin, Part-Time Instructor | Jessica Martin is a part-time G-RAP instructor. She grew up in Chicago and New York, and has also spent significant amounts of time in Indiana, Florida, and Michigan. After graduating from Northwestern University in the late 1990s with a double major in History and Fiction Writing, Jessica landed in the financial services industry, where she became a research analyst specializing in the technology sector, especially the (then-emerging!) Internet and web-related services industry. In 1999, she decided to return to the world of academics, and enrolled at the University of Colorado-Boulder, to earn her PhD in American History. She has taught at CU since graduating in 2006 and specializes in modern American history, especially American foreign relations. Over the last several years, she has created and led a variety of courses for undergraduates, ranging from investigations of Cold War thought and culture to understanding the geopolitical legacies of 9/11. Jessica has been an instructor with G-RAP since its inception and also teaches for the International Affairs program at CU, where she leads upper-level courses related to America's evolving role in world affairs and assists with the Honors Program. She loves the close community of G-RAP and feels lucky every time she drives into Boulder for work! When she's not on campus, you can usually find Jessica practicing yoga, downhill skiing, making lists of things that she was supposed to have done at least a week ago, trying out new dessert recipes, or curled up with a good book. She is married and has two adorable children (Maggie and Finn). She and her family live in downtown Denver. |
Student Staff
![]() Catherine Bogart, Student Coordinator | Catherine is a Student Coordinator in G-RAP. She was born in New York, New York, but grew up in a town outside of Baltimore, MD. She spent all four years of high school at a small boarding school north of Baltimore, in the heart of Maryland’s horse country. She has one younger brother who is a junior in high school and one older sister who also attends CU and will be graduating in December. Living away from home all throughout high school and being an RA in her dorm her senior year of high school have given Catherine a lot of experience with dorm life and allow her to help anyone feeling down or struggling with living away from home. Catherine loves traveling, hiking, playing sports like lacrosse and tennis and watching sports–especially soccer (go Real Madrid and Chelsea!) and football (Go Ravens!). She is a proud Gleek, and is always down to watch any sports game on TV. Catherine is pursuing two degrees at CU, one in Broadcast News and one in International Affairs. She is excited to meet all the new GRAP students and cannot wait to get to know them better! |
![]() Chelsea Jewell, Student Coordinator | Chelsea is a Student Coordinator with the Global Studies RAP. She is an International Spanish for the Professions major (Spanish/business) graduating in spring 2013 with an emphasis in Chicana/o Studies. She came to CU to study English and changed majors after one semester. Chelsea grew up in Nederland, Colorado, about 30 minutes outside of Boulder. After spending her junior year of high school in Waimea, Hawaii, she graduated from Nederland High School in 2009. She loves Google Calendar (too much?), making lists, Boulder Creek in summer, card games and football season. Chelsea is a member of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, and holds the position of marketing coordinator on the CU Boulder Spanish Club executive board. In her spare time, Chelsea enjoys strolling around in nice weather, baking ginger snaps, catching up with Damon and Stefan on The Vampire Diaries or laughing at Liz Lemon on 30 Rock., and especially a good book. |
![]() Haley Newkirk, Student Coordinator | Haley Newkirk is a Student Coordinator for G-RAP. She is a freshman majoring in International Affairs and French. Born in D.C. and raised in Minnesota, she moved west at fourteen and graduated from Evergreen High School. She loved Colorado too much to leave for college and started at CU this fall. She loves baking, skiing, singing, watching football (crushing on Tebow and not ashamed!), and staying busy. She is a club swimmer here at CU and competes in triathlons in the summer, so if you have any questions about balancing sports, a social life, and that ten-page paper, stop on by! |

By Grand Junction) but Boulder is home now. No bias intended, but this place is the best…where else can you go hiking, rock climbing, to a concert and any ethnic restaurant you can imagine in one day? I’m double majoring in International Affairs and Theatre, with minors in Japanese and Dance. After graduation is the Peace Corps, and after that remains to be seen. I guess a career or something. I enjoy anything satirical, volunteering with CU’s service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega, adventuring in foreign countries, music of all sorts, and of course, shredding the gnar in ski season. I’m stoked to get to know everyone and welcome you to the best RAP on campus! | |||
